Guest Speaker

Program–chair Verbon welcomed guests Angela Toms, Small Business Advisor for Scotiabank that sponsors ‘Hockey Day in Canada’, Andrea Green and guest speaker Bruce Keating.  Both Andrea and Bruce serve on the local committee formed to bring Hockey Day in Canada to Corner Brook in January.
Bruce started his presentation by talking about the history of Hockey Day in Canada.  This January, it will be the 18th year of this event that celebrates the game of hockey and it is only the second time it will be held in Newfoundland. The local committee with Sportsnet has 75 people involved in this event plus many volunteers.
The festival will celebrate hockey from the grassroots level to big league hockey
Bruce went on to discuss the sites of this celebration which will be the Civic centre, a festival area and also on the High School soccer pitch, two out door rinks will be constructed giving 4 ice pads for games.
The event will be held from January 17 – 20th 2018. Entertainers will be part of the festival as well as hockey stars.  A pre-event concert with noted performers, will be held at Marble Mountain
During the four days, there will be many, many events including school visits, skating with the Stanley cup, several hockey games for all ages, hockey clinics and more. Besides well-known artists performing   during the 4 days there will be hockey stars attending who will run clinics as well as playing hockey.
The festival will culminate on Saturday with special events involving a Stanley Cup parade, Maple leaf clinics and a broadcast hockey game highlighting Don Cherry and Ron McLean.
Many broadcasters and players both past and present will be in attendance at this four day festival that sounds like a fabulous four days for all Western Newfoundlanders whether   hockey fans or not.
Bruce was thanked for his presentation before the meeting was adjourned.
