Notes from the Rotary Luncheon Meeting   April 25 2019
Gerry chaired the meeting
Club Business
Rotary Auction May 11
Gerry spoke about new ideas for raffles at the auction. One was a Golden ticket raffle, which he explained and another was a Rose Ticket Raffle to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Linda reminded Rotarians with donated items to let Noreen know about the items with a detailed description and value as soon as possible so she can prepare the paper work for the silent auction.
Lorraine reviewed the ticket sales. She would like to know the number sold and she reminded Rotarians to let her have the ticket stubs so Jackie can plan the table seating.  There are about 30 tickets remaining to be sold.
All Rotarians are asked to donate a bottle of wine for the Wine Raffle.
Honorary Rotarian Marjorie and guest Malcolm Turner were welcomed.
Guest Speaker
Linda welcomed and introduced the guest speaker Dr. Ian Simpson. She began by
speaking of his early life in England and his career in medicine in Newfoundland as well as his environmental concerns. He is to be awarded an honorary doctorate at the upcoming Memorial University Grenfell Campus Convocation on May 16.
Ian began by talking about his book ‘Memoirs of a Newfoundland Doctor’, which he is selling with the proceeds being donated to the Western Memorial Foundation. He kindly donated a couple of books towards the Rotary Auction.
He then continued to talk about how his interest in natural history began and how this with the environmental awareness of his wife Sheila, helped him develop his environmental activism
When he first came to Newfoundland he was based at St Lawrence and then Stephenville Crossing before coming to Corner Brook. He talked humorously about several of his experiences over the years. He read a chapter from his book to illustrate these further. The talk was interesting and entertaining and anecdotes about members of the community added to it.
Jim thanked Ian before the meeting was adjourned
