Guests and Guest Speaker
Program–chair Brent welcomed his guests Suzanne Dawe and Joanne Kendrick from WIC and then introduced his guest presenter Sharon McLennon, director of the newly formed Newfoundland and Labrador Workforce Innovation Centre (WIC).
This Centre is based in and is in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic, Corner Brook. Through a slideshow, Sharon gave an overview on the Centre and its mandate which to quote from their handout states “ AIC provides a coordinated, central point of access to engage government, career and employment services providers, skills development organizations and stakeholders in the business and community sectors.  The goal is to help research and test new and innovative workforce development models that make direct links to increasing individual employability.
Sharon went on to speak of some of the challenges affecting the Newfoundland and Labrador labour market.  WIC plans to drive change so the provincial workforce is the right workforce in the right sectors for prosperity.
She outlined the work of WIC that is to provide proposal based funding for applied research projects, to be a central repository and central access point for innovative employment and training practices, to disseminate this body of knowledge to stakeholders via training sessions and finally to engage a network of labour market partners to facilitate idea exchange, research opportunities and innovative approaches.  She continued by speaking of the projects that are already being funded and agencies and businesses that would be eligible for funding.
The strategy and aim of WIC is to encourage sustainable prosperity and growth in the province using innovative researched methods.

Martin thanked Sharon for her interesting and informative talk after she had answered several questions regarding other Centres throughout the region and country.
Andre adjourned the meeting.
