Guest Speaker
Leslie chair of the Rotary Adventures in Citizenship program introduced the high school student who won the Rotary High School Speak-off in March, Simon Boitsefski. By winning this Simon was sponsored by the club to attend the Rotary Adventures in Citizenship Program held in Ottawa from May 14th – Wednesday May 17th. 2023. The club was pleased that Simon’s mother Sonia was able to attend the meeting and hear her son speak.
Simon began by thanking the club for sponsoring him for this incredible experience of being part of the Adventures in Citizenship Program. 153 students from across Canada participated in the program. They lived in a University of Ottawa residence which was a positive experience for Simon. Simon felt he learnt so much about being a Canadian Citizen from the different sessions given over the four days.
He began by speaking of the Canadian Museum of History and the First People’s Hall and the many totem poles and their significance.  He noted that in the Canadian War Museum there was reference to a weather station in Labrador. This automatic weather station Kurt was erected in northern Labrador built by a German U-boat crew in 1943. It was forgotten about until 1977.
Simon has done a video blog of his experiences in Ottawa.
He went on to speak of the different leaders of sessions he attended and how valuable he felt they were. He concluded his talk to Rotary by giving the short speech he gave at the final dinner when he was one of the speakers from Newfoundland and Labrador to speak.
Simon answered several questions before being thanked by Leslie on behalf of the club.
