The Spinner September 5 2024
Notes from the Rotary Meeting 12.30pm Thursday, September 5, 2024
President Jackie chaired the meeting.
Guest Speaker
Program-chair Karen introduced guest speakers Louise Gauthier, Executive Director, and Kelsey Street, Project Coordinator of CB Nuit 2024.
Louise began by speaking about the history of CB Nuit with this being the festival’s 8th year and she noted how the festival has grown.  This year the night festival has the theme SPIRAL and will take place along West Street, Corner Brook from 7pm until midnight on September 28 – 29th.
This year there will be two anchor acts.
One anchor act is TUPIQ A.C.T which will be performed on the United Church lawn. In this 30-minute show this three-member group tells stories though contemporary throat singing, drum dancing and Inuit games. The performance dances between reality and the dream world using contemporary circus and traditional Inuit arts to create the worlds inhabited by man and the strange beings that share the tundra.
The other anchor act set up in the United Church, is Kirk Dunne, The Knitting Pilgrim. This multidisciplinary one-man show features him as an actor and knitter combining personal story telling, image projection and his three huge, knitted panels 20 feet tall that look like stain glass windows.
Kelsey and Louise each speaking in turn continued by speaking of the theme SPIRALS and how this theme will be expressed in different ways at the festival.
Every year there is a community project planned to involve the local elementary schools, and this will happen this year also.
There will be many projects on display on West Street during the festival including a virtual reality one, Corner Brook Ghost Walk live in V/R. This will be a virtual reality ride down West Street in the 1950s narrated by Mark Bradbury.
The singing group of special needs students, Spirit Within will be performing at the festival.
Full details of projects and artists can be found in the CB Nuit website
Louise spoke about the collaboration she has with the six Atlantic Festivals and how beneficial that is in exchanging ideas monthly.
She noted community partners are very supportive of the CB Nuit Festival in which community is created through Art.
Questions were asked about the festival before Paula thanked Louise and Kelsey and the meeting was adjourned.
