Toonie Quest West Weekly Draw
This week there was no winner so the prize money will be rolled over again for the next Thursday draw. If you have a Toonie Quest West number remember your number is entered into the weekly draw whether you play or not. Make sure each week you pay your $2 and remember you can always pay in advance. The money each week is halved between the winner and the organisers - Xavier House and Corner Brook Rotary Club.
Guest Speaker
Rotarian Verbon introduced the guest speaker the Mayor of Corner Brook. Jim Parsons. Jim began by thanking Rotary for the invitation to speak about what is going on in the city with regards to construction.
Last year was a bumper construction year in Corner Brook. The construction along Mount Bernard Avenue was completed. This was important as a new sewer line was needed to be installed and upgraded to serve the new Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Last year a new retaining wall by the War Memorial was constructed.
Another project was the gulch project that was started which will affect the major storm sewer system. Jim talked about the work and how this involves rerouting water lines that are 50 feet below the surface without cutting off any water supply.
This coming summer the Great Trail phase 2 will be worked on so the trail will eventually go from the western portion of the city trail right through the eastern part of the city right up to the Man in the Mountain trail.
He went on to discuss the funding for capital works which is dependent on city, provincial, and federal funding. He noted the need for assured regular funding.
He continued by speaking of the different road projects for 2025.
He ended his talk by speaking of the new Recreation and Aquatic Centre based at Grenfell Campus. This centre will be opening soon. Hiring of staff is done, and the staff are ready to start work in the new facility. Delays have taken place, but he feels it is most important that all facets of this new construction be done properly. Jim feels this is an amazing facility that will fill a need in the community and recreation in the area will be changed when this new facility is opened.
Jackie thanked Jim on behalf of the club for his interesting and informative talk.
The meeting was then adjourned.
