Notes from the Rotary Meeting  12.30pm Thursday, August 6 2020

Before lunch was served, President Chris welcomed Rotarians to the lunch meeting at the Glynmill Inn.

Program-chair Kathleen welcomed and introduced guest speaker Rex Brown accompanied by his daughter Jill. Rex told three stories from his book Twine Loft to be published by Flanker Press next year.

The first one was about his experiences in 1999 as Vice-President of Cultural Programmes for the Corner Brook Canada Winter Games. He spoke how he exposed the athletic world  to the arts  through Newfoundland artists celebrating Newfoundland culture. His influence in celebrating local and provincial culture has been included in all later Games.

Rex who grew up in Tack’s Cove,  Placenta Bay followed this by humorously reading two more stories from the Twine Loft.  These were about times gone by in a small outport.   Unfortunately there was no time for more stories all of which were interesting, amusing  and very enjoyable.

Rex answered questions before being thanked by Elaine.

Club Business

Rotary Arts Centre(RAC)

Chris welcomed David Smallwood of the RAC and presented him with the annual donation cheque from Rotary giving naming rights to the Centre.

Club Presentation

Chris presented Past-President Trina with her past president pin. Trina had received a thank you gift certificate at the June meeting  for her work and dedicated service as president of the Club for two years.

August BBQ Social

This had been discussed in July with the thought of the province moving to  covid-19 level 1 regulations by August. This could happen in the next few weeks but until that happens the Club can not make a plan for a social gathering. The possible date  for a summer social will be decided later as provincial regulations allow.

The meeting was adjourned at 1.30pm

Summer Rotary Meetings   The next in-person meeting is planned for Thursday, August 20 at 12.30pm, GlynMill Inn.
