Notes from the Rotary Meeting 12.30pm Thursday, August 29, 2024
President Jackie chaired the meeting.
Guest Speaker
After lunch, Jackie introduced guest speaker Kristy Hoddinott, Director of Go Western Newfoundland. She talked about the role of the western region destination marketing organization and the projects and activities the organization has undertaken to promote the region.
This is a non-profit organisation with a board of directors made up of volunteers predominantly from the private sector, with one director from each of the five economic zones in Western Newfoundland and two at-large directors. All board members have an interest in tourism.
The mission of the Western NL DMO Inc. is to support the continued growth and sustainability of the provincial tourism industry through regional marketing, destination development and market readiness initiatives that will attract more visitors, increase length of stay and provide more experiences that are aligned with the Newfoundland and Labrador brand.
Go to Western Newfoundland is one of 5 “Go to” organisations in the province.
She explained how the organisation works for tourism operators with its market readiness strategies to help them improve their offerings and through its destination development strategies that helps operators work together.
She continued by looking at the government tourism strategies over the years starting with Vision 2020 which was launched in 2009 with the idea of bringing together public and private partnerships which was then a growing industry. This was followed with Vision 2022-2026 which was a transformative time followed by 2024-2026 when the path focussed on a more sustainable path so that the industry would grow in a responsible manner. The latest long-term strategy 2026 and Beyond, will focus on guiding and supporting tourism development with an equal focus on both economics and the well-being of people and places.
Kristy then gave examples of their involvement with tourism operators and the different travel tour types of companies as well as the work at initial destinations such as Deer Lake Airport and Port aux Basques.
Another focus of her office is different types of trade shows in Canada, USA and Internationally at which travelling to Western Newfoundland is promoted.
Kristy answered several questions before being thanked for her interesting and informative talk by Elaine.
The meeting adjourned at 1.30pm.
