Notes from the Rotary Meeting 12.30pm Thursday, January 12, 2023
President Jackie chaired the meeting.
Rotarian Leslie introduced her guest Tony Joyce, manager of RBC Corner Brook.
Club Business
Jackie reviewed some Rotary news.
She announced that Rotarians should be proud that there very few cases of polio had been recorded throughout the world. This showed the strength and important value of the Rotary Polio Plus campaign to eliminate polio.
President Jackie then reviewed the Rotary Four Way test.
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and non-sectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. Of the things we think, say or do
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Guest Speaker
Program - chair Verbon introduced the guest speaker Jim Parsons, Mayor of Corner Brook.
Jim began by giving some budget information noting that the city is in a very stable position. He spoke in detail about one city expense that had increased greatly, and this is the water treatment costs. He continued looking at the city finances and noted the city is well positioned from a debt perspective and he continued speaking of how residential property values increased in 2022 while business property values have decreased slightly.
Jim continued looking at all the positive happenings in the last year particularly in the tourism sector.   Plans are taking shape to promote the region for tourism. New walking and biking trails are being planned and upgraded and all improvements being planned will add up to the region becoming a more interesting tourism destination.
He went on to discuss the new Aquatic Recreation Centre being constructed at Grenfell Campus. He outlined what the new Centre would hold, and it is hoped to be completed in early 2024. Jim then spoke of the different construction projects being done throughout the city and the upgrading of city trails to make them more suitable for all. 
He continued by speaking of the various projects in the city to which financial and help-in-kind has been given by the city.
Jim’s talk gave a very positive view of what is being accomplished in Corner Brook and its plans for the future.

The Spinner December 22 2022
Belated Notes from the Rotary Meeting 12.30pm Thursday, December 15, 2023
President Jackie chaired the meeting.
Guests Jennifer Hartley, Neil Robbins and Stelman Flynn were introduced and welcomed.
Club Business
The next meeting on December 22nd will be the Christmas meeting at which the Hamilton family group - ‘The Hamiltones’ will be performing.  There will be no lunch meeting on December 29th but a social will be held in the evening at the home of President Jackie.
Paula has agreed to continue as the chair of the Rotary Music Festival committee. The new Vice-Chair of the committee will be Karen Michael.
Thanks, from the club go to both Paula and Karen for volunteering their services in leading the Rotary Music Festival committee.
Guest Speaker
Program - chair Carol introduced the guest speaker Tammy Priddle, President & ChiefExecutive Officer at Deer Lake Regional Airport. Tammy gave a most interesting and informative presentation beginning with the economic input of the airport as an economic regional sparkplug for the area. She continued by looking at the aircraft movements between 2009 – 2021. In 2021 the airport was the fourth busiest in the Atlantic Canada region. She spoke of the strong passenger recovery in 2022 with the newcomers Swoop and Flair adding to the regular carriers PAL and Air Canada. The importance of the Deer Lake airport to the major tourism destinations in the area was noted. She spoke of the airport’s strategic plan for 2022 – 2024 before noting challenges the airport will need to face in the future. Jackie thanked Tammy on behalf of the club for her presentation.
