Notes from the Rotary Meeting 12.30pm Thursday, February 17, 2022
Chris welcomed everyone to the meeting. This is the first meeting since December because of covid concerns and regulations. Olaf introduced his guest Adam Baker who is interested in joining Rotary.

After lunch was eaten, two new members were inducted into the club.
Rotarian sponsor Linda introduced and welcomed Carol Anstey to the Club.
Kathleen standing in for Rotarian sponsor Elaine, introduced and welcomed Ian Sutherland. This was followed by Verbon with President Chris’ help, inducting Carol, and Ian as new members of the Club.
Welcome Carol and Ian to the Rotary Club of Corner Brook.
Club Business
The main body of the meeting was for Club business. Chris began by speaking of the executive meeting held on February 3rd and the different matters discussed

Water First Project
Kathleen had passed out fliers to each lunch table about this indigenous water project sponsored by the Rotary Club of Guelph and District 7010.   Discussion followed about investigating a possible water project in the province.  Ian said he would contact Dr Kelly Vodden about a possible project in which the Club could be involved. Bernd mentioned contacting Jason King, local Wastewater Management Agency which could be another method of finding a more local project.   Olaf wondered if contacting the Minister of Indigenous Affairs to find out possible needs in Nunavut and Labrador would be a good plan.
The monies for such a project would come from the finances raised earlier with Wine to Water projects.

Financial Matters
Treasurer Jackie is planning to present a document itemizing the Club’s annual donations. She will present that to the executive in the next couple of weeks. She feels the Club should decide the best ways to spend monies raised. In the past couple of years despite covid regulations, monies have been raised successfully.  The Club usually has one main fundraiser per year which usually has been a Spring Auction.

Club involvement with Louisa Horne’s PhD thesis on Volunteerism
A one-hour discussion was held on February 16th with four club members Chris, Linda, Elaine, and Kathleen present via zoom with Louisa. It was interesting talking about how volunteerism has changed and why and the effect on service clubs with focus on Rotary.

Spring Fundraising
A fundraiser will need to be held sometime in the spring. Jackie wondered if a May/ June in-person dinner and dance with auction could be held.  She will reach out to the Civic Centre to see if that could be a possibility.

New Executive for 2022-23 and Corporate Membership
Several members of the present executive are willing to remain in their positions for another year, but the Club will need to be looking for a new president for next year.
Corporate membership has been discussed earlier but should be encouraged further by contacting small businesses and offices with a possibility of them joining Rotary.

Rotary Music Festival
Paula, chair of the music festival committee gave a report on the Music Festival. The festival is going ahead this year after a break of two years with sessions being held from Monday, March 28th to Thursday, March 31stending with the Rose Bowl competition. There will be no final concert scheduled. The individual classes will be for voice, piano, instrumental and musical theatre. Rotarian Ian is looking after the scheduling of volunteer sessions and more details will be available shortly.

Spring Rotary Projects

1.Rotary Read - Along
Normally a $500 donation is made to a primary-elementary school for books in classroom libraries. In non-covid times a morning was set aside when Rotarians, friends and volunteers went into the selected school and read a story from one of the donated books. In the last couple of years Grenfell Campus has partnered with Rotary with this project. Last year a donation was made to Sacred Heart School for the classroom libraries but no in-person visit to the school could be made due to covid restrictions.

2.Rotary Adventure in Citizenship Program
Leslie, chair of this project will find out if this will go ahead this year. Last year the winner of the 2019 high school speak-off attended a virtual conference via zoom.

Chris before the meeting was adjourned mentioned that the Rotary theme for March is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. The assistant District Governor, Mel Dean would be pleased to attend a Rotary meeting to speak on this topic.

The meeting was adjourned at 1.35pm
