August Rotary Social
The August Rotary Social will be held in the evening of August 14 at the Jiwen Garden Restaurant at 6pm. More details will be emailed to Rotarians.
Program
Program-chair Karen introduced the guest speaker Sarah Thompson, creator of the Newfound Family Drama Company which entertains many in the summer months with the nightly dinner theatre show at the Elks Club on Carmen Avenue.
Sarah began by passing out a flyer about the dinner theatre being offered this year by the company.
The show which runs in July and August on Monday, Tuesday and Friday evenings is a dinner theatre entitled ‘Tribute to Reba McEntire’.
The flyer asks the audience to join the gang at Leroy’s Diner as they hold a tribute to the legendary queen of country Reba McEntire.
Alongside the show, a delicious three course dinner is served.
Sarah began by talking of the history of the Newfound Drama Company since its inception in 2019. She felt on the west coat of the province there was a tourism gap which she went about filling.
She talked about her vision to provide employment for young people in the arts as well as giving audiences a fun musical evening with a tasty dinner included.
In 2019, she copied the work done by her father and wrote a show and opened her summer show. At first the company planned to offer shows throughout the year but after covid she decided offering a summer dinner theatre in Corner Brook would work best.
Each year since covid she has mounted a new dinner theatre show. Currently she has 2 high school students, 5 university students and 4 adults hired to work on the show. She tries to provide a positive supporting environment for those involved with the show. She feels that this family environment where there is much talk about working in the arts particularly in the theatrical arts with a diverse group of young people is helpful in their development. Sarah tries to set up each young person working for her for success.
Sarah answered several questions before being thanked for her interesting talk.
