Notes from the Rotary Meeting  12.30pm Thursday, November 12 2020

President Chris welcomed everyone

Club Business

Chris  spoke about the messages from Glenda, Corner Brook City Events  Officer regarding the city’s new format for the Santa Claus Parade on December 12. The Club had  been invited to  decorate a story book board but as these were taken very quickly this was no longer a possibility. We could also choose to have a Club table or banner along West Street for the standing parade. Glenda had mentioned that volunteers would be needed before and during the Parade so Kathleen is going to find out more details about how Rotarians could volunteer.

The Newfoundland Alzheimer’s Society had requested a donation from the Club.  Some discussion followed and Gerry is going to find out if any donation made would be used in the western region

Program

Program Chair Elaine introduced the guest speaker  Robert Murphy from the  Corner Brook Legion Branch.  Robert began by speaking of the different Remembrance Day held the previous day and the effect the lockdown for covid-19 had had on the Legion.   In the spring all bookings for the Legion Hall had been cancelled and the Hall was shut down completely. Fortunately last fall a Chase the Ace game had been hosted by the Legion and  the results of this meant that the local branch is financially fine.

Robert then spoke of the arrangements for Remembrance Day with no parade, no public participation and with only 6 wreaths being laid and no gathering after the ceremony for legionnaires.  Poppies had been sold and this proved to be a successful campaign. He urged Rotarians to  buy poppies each year as the monies donated are used to help veterans living in the local region.

He himself had served in the Black Watch regiment and ended by talking  of two veterans who had served in both World Wars and their philosophy.

Questions followed his excellent talk and then he was thanked for the Club by Ann.

The Rotary Wheel was spun by Jim with good news stories being shared.  Linda shared the story that the Vice -President elect of the USA, Kamala Harris is a Rotarian and was a charter president of the Rotary Club of Pontevedra.

The meeting adjourned at 1.30pm
