Summer BBQ

Gerry explained that the summer BBQ will be held on Wednesday, August 26 at 6pm at the Port Authority Patio.   A BBQ will be rented and to meet covid-19 regulations Gerry and Verbon will do all the barbequing. Jackie will buy the potatoes and  Rotarians attending will be asked to bring one of salad, rolls and finger-food dessert plus chairs, drinks and plates for the entree.

Verbon introduced the Mayor Jim Parsons who provided an update  on the City of Corner Brook with the impact of covis-19 and the 2020 year.

Jim began by talking about the happenings at City Hall when the covid  lockdown began.   Within two weeks city business was progressing with no interruption in service. Meetings were held by Zoom and staff that could work from home were doing so. Community partners were consulted to ensure needed services were in place.   The medium and long term problems since lockdown are being addressed  in spite of a revenue shortfall these plans will be adjusted as needed. The good news is that revenues have not been impacted as greatly as thought even though from March to May businesses have been hit hard.

The mayor went on to speak of business areas that are doing well.  Both residential and commercial construction is up. Tourism projects are developing. The new aquatic centre is to be built at Grenfell Campus  funded by community stakeholders, federal and provincial funds. He went on to speak how Corner Brook’s economic diversity depends on partnerships with nearby towns which will help enrich the whole area.

Jackie thanked Jim for his update on the city  and the meeting was adjourned at 1.30pm
