Notes from the Rotary Meeting 12.30pm Thursday, March 16, 2023
Vice-President Olaf chaired the meeting.
Guests Stan Pike, Dr and Mrs. Boitsefski, parents of one of the speakers were welcomed.
This was the meeting at which the Adventures in Citizenship speak- off was held.  The chair of this program, Leslie welcomed the high school speakers Colin Spencer, Troy Patterson, Max Pittman and Simon Boitsefski and their teacher sponsor Paula Grudich.
Before the lunch meeting began the three judges Leslie, Olaf and Andre interviewed each of the students.
The Adventures in Citizenship program that this year will be an in-person program running from May 14 – 17thin Ottawa, is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ottawa.  The program was created to help senior high school students gain an understanding about the responsibilities of Canadian citizenship. As guests of the Rotary Club of Ottawa participants learn about leadership and how Canadian institutions operate through visits, meetings and presentations by political leaders, senior officials, and many others. There is time also for fun with the 160 student-participants from coast to coast.
The Rotary Club of Corner Brook sponsors a high school student from this area to attend the program.  The student selection is done by a speak – off with the participating students this year speaking on “What it means to be a Canadian.”
The order of speaking was chosen randomly with the order being Colin then Max followed by Troy and lastly Simon.
All four students spoke extremely well with each of them giving a different viewpoint of the topic.  Corner Brook should be extremely proud of these four young men.
After the talks the judges withdrew to select a winner.  When they returned the winner selected was Simon with Max as alternate so if for any reason Simon could not attend the gathering in May, Max would go in his stead.
After Simon has been to Ottawa the Club will ask him to speak at a lunch meeting about his experiences.
The Rotary Club of Corner Brook wishes to thank the participants Colin, Troy, Max, and Simon for participating in the speak-off, to congratulate them on their interesting and well-prepared talks and to thank their teacher sponsor Paula Grudich.  Thanks also go to the Rotarian judges who had a difficult job having to select a winner as the speakers were all very good and thanks also go to the program chair Leslie.
The meeting adjourned at 1.30pm.
